The Coaches

Boyan van der Elst

Age:33

Previous sports experience
Where do I start? basketball, judo, tennis, fitness, gymnastics, snowboarding, golf. I think it’s safe to say that making sports my profession was the right thing to do! I can’t sit still, but when I was introduced to CrossFit … it’s not just the sport itself but the community, friends and great vibe that you get while doing it, this is something I never experienced while I was practising other sports.

What drives you as a coach
Helping people to develop new skills and getting stronger. First I wanted to help people as a physiotherapist but now I can prevent them from having to go to one! The most satisfaction I get from people is when they hit a new personal record or did something they never thought they could and see them smile.
Sharing my knowledge of movement and helping people to become the best version of them self, that, for me, is everything.

What are your specialities
Weightlifting, strongman movements and bbq…. ow it’s just about sports? Then just the first 2! I’m an explosive lifter so I love throwing or lifting heavy objects, everything short and intense is good for me!

For which WOD can we wake you up in the middle of the night?
Heavy lifting and snatching no special WOD in particular I guess… But if you need to, wake me up for strongman movements or Olympic lifting.

Age: 25

Previous sports experience
Before I started CrossFit I did kickboxing and MMA. I trained very hard and pushing myself in training was always very important to me. So after I stopped doing martial arts I was determined to find something tough and challenging to dedicate myself to. Not long after that, I found CrossFit.

What drives you as a coach
The one thing I love most about coaching is to try to make people as excited about training as I am. Trying to push people that little bit extra which will get them the results they want is what drives me.

What are your specialities
I love teaching weightlifting the most. Being able to move the bar with the right technique, the right speed and the right power is a true art. There is always room for improvement no matter how good you are and that’s what makes it so interesting.

For which WOD can we wake you up in the middle of the night?
I don’t have a favourite workout but I had to choose something it would most likely involve a heavy barbell and rowing.

Javier Wanga

Age: 37

Previous Sports Experience
In my early days, I was active in the sport of judo. At the age of 4 I entered the sport and I have been a competitive athlete for about 30 years. Representing the island of Aruba, I competed abroad many times with the following major highlights: participation in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and the 2009 World Championships in Rotterdam.

What drives you as a coach
I like to see people work hard and try things they’ve never done before. When they do so, I’m so honoured to be standing next to them and cheer them on while trying to give them my best technical input and motivational push. Satisfied faces at the end of a workout makes me a happy coach

What are your specialities
Come to me for any type of explosive movements such as power techniques in weightlifting but also bodyweight skills that require explosive output such as muscle-ups.

For which WOD can we wake you up in the middle of the night?
There’s no specific Benchmark WOD that has my preference, however, I’m always in for a good grind when barbell and gymnastics meet each other in a programmed WOD. Ps, better let me sleep if there’s a long rowing session…Zzzzzzz.

Available for the below PT sessions.
Gymnastics:
Pull Up & Progressions
Muscle Up & Progressions
Upper- & Lowerbody Strength Development that supports gymnastics abilities

Previous Sport’s experience
I’ve been a professional skier for the last 16 years, competing for Great Britain on the World Cup tour. I started as a downhill racer and moved over to the freestyle sport of ski cross and I’m current British Ski Cross Champion. I was always big into weightlifting and found CrossFit 5 years ago when I integrated it into my training.

What drives you as a coach
Coaching people to do things they didn’t know their body could do, watching them achieve a new PR… I love to see people progress. After years of rehabbing various injuries, I have a good understanding of the struggles of the body and love to help people get healthier and stronger for day to day life.

What are your specialities
Body weight explosive movements and anything balance related. I love the balance ball.

For which WOD can we wake you up in the middle of the night?
My favourite WOD’s are the really mentally challenging ones. The ones that you know are going to hurt like hell but you feel such an awesome accomplishment after. Anything involving leg strength and core and I’ll be there!

Jemma

Age: 34

Previous Sports Experience
12 years of ballet, 20 years of yoga, 6 years of Crossfit

What drives you as a coach
For me, teaching yoga to Crossfitters is about helping people move well and giving them the space to calm down and de-stress. Yoga might be the only hour of someone’s day when they can completely relax and step away from normal life. I consider it a serious responsibility to create that space for them and make that time count.

What are your specialities
Vinyasa (flow yoga), body alignment

For which WOD can we wake you up in the middle of the night?
Anything with a barbell 🙂

In a far past I have been a Les Mills Body combat coach at a couple of gyms. To be very honest back then I became a coach because it was the only way I would actually go to the gym. Until I discovered CrossFit.

However I’m not the coach at RTM who will make you do burpees and muscle-ups. My field of expertise more or less puts me in your kitchen!

What drives you as a coach
Motivating people and helping them reach goals that they never thought they would, makes that I absolutely love being Accountability Coach at RTM.

Food (eating and cooking) has always been my passion and in different ways throughout my life I have integrated this passion into my daily life. I am always looking for ways to make the tasty even healthier!

My background in motivational coaching combined with my love for food and helping people make that I love doing what I do!

What are your specialities
My lasagna is an award winner and my salads are to die for… but I don’t think that’s what’s meant here.

But seriously, come to me if you need insights in your diet, if you need some support getting regularity in planning your workouts or if you just need a pep talk! I am very happy to help you out 🙂

For which WOD can we wake you up in the middle of the night?
I’d rather you didn’t wake me up in the middle of the night so that I am well rested for a WOD with deadlifts, wall sits, t2b, box jumps and overhead farmer walk. And after that a yoga session at the box!… I know, not your regular answer but I’m not your regular coach 🙂

Lisette Braakenburg

Age: 29

Previous Sports Experience
I’ve always been an active person. I played field hockey in my younger years, took up running in my early 20s (did a few half marathons and at some point even completed a quarter triathlon – which is not something I strive to do again ;-)) and after a while, I found out I loved the weights area in the gym. Apart from that, I love to hit the slopes during winter.

What drives you as a coach
You know that feeling you get when you’ve completed a training that you thought you could never do? That feeling of complete fulfilment and being on-top-of-the-world? That’s a feeling I wish for everyone to experience, and what’s better than being part of the reason they feel that way? 🙂

What are your specialities
I wouldn’t necessarily call them my specialities, but longer workouts that force you to divide and be smart about your energy are my favourites.

For which WOD can we wake you up in the middle of the night?
Anything with hand-stand push ups, squats, pull-ups and rope climbs!
