The Coaches

Boyan van der Elst

Previous sports experience
Where do I start? Basketball, Judo, Tennis, Fitness, Gymnastics, Snowboarding it’s safe to say that making sports my profession was the right thing to do! I can’t sit still 🙂 But CrossFit … it’s not just the sport itself but the Community and Friends you get while doing it, this is something I never experienced while practicing other sports.

What drives you as a coach
Helping people to develop new skills and getting stronger. first I wanted to help people as a physiotherapist but now I can prevent them from having to go to one! The most satisfaction I get from people is when they hit a new personal record or did something they never thought they could and see them smile.

What are your specialities
Weightlifting, Strongman and Eating…. ow it’s just about sports? Then the first 2! I’m an explosive lifter so I love throwing or lifting heavy objects, everything short and intense is good for me!

For which WOD can we wake you up in the middle of the night?
Heavy lifting and snatching no special WOD in particular I guess… But if you need to, wake me up for strongman movements or Olympic lifting.

Previous sports experience
Before I started crossfit I did kickboxing and MMA. I trained very hard and pushing myself in training was always very important to me. So after I stopped doing martial arts I was determined to find something tough and challenging to dedicate myself to. Not long after that, I found crossfit.

What drives you as a coach
The one thing I love most about coaching is to try to make people as excited about training as I am. Trying to push people that little bit extra which will get them the results they want is what drives me.

What are your specialities
I love teaching weightlifting the most. Being able to move the bar with the right technique, the right speed and the right power is a true art. There is always room for improvement no matter how good you are and that’s what makes it so interesting.

For which WOD can we wake you up in the middle of the night?
I don’t have a favourite workout but I had to choose something it would most likely involve a heavy barbell and rowing.

Previous Sports Experience
In my early days, I was active in the sport of Judo. At age 4 I entered the sport and was a competitive athlete for about 30 years. Representing the island of Aruba, I competed abroad much time with major highlights my participation in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney followed by the 2009 World Championships in Rotterdam.

What drives you as a coach
I like to see people work hard and try things they’ve never done before. When they do so, I’m so honoured to be standing next to them and cheer them on while trying to give them my best technical input and motivational push. Satisfied faces at the end of a workout make me a happy coach

What are your specialities
Come to me for any type of explosive movements such as Power Techniques in Weightlifting but also bodyweight skills that require explosive output such as Muscle Ups.

For which WOD can we wake you up in the middle of the night?
There’s no specific Benchmark WOD that has my preference, however, I’m always in for a good grind when Barbell and Gymnastics meet each other in a programmed WOD. Ps, better let me sleep if there’s a long rowing session…Zzzzzzz.

Pamela Thorburn

Previous Sport’s experience
I’ve been a professional Skier for the last 16 years, competing for Great Britain on the World Cup tour. I started as a Downhill racer and moved over to the Freestyle sport of Ski Cross and I’m current British Ski
Cross Champion. I was always big into weightlifting and found Crossfit 5 years ago when I integrated it into my training.

What drives you as a coach
Coaching people to do things they didn’t know their body could do, watching them achieve a new PR… I love to see people progress. After years of rehabbing various injuries, I have a good understanding of the struggles of the body and love to help people get healthier and stronger for day to day life.

What are your specialities
Body weight explosive movements and anything balance related. I love a balance ball.

For which WOD can we wake you up in the middle of the night?
My favourite wods are the really mentally challenging ones. The ones that you know are going to hurt like hell but you feel such an awesome accomplishment after. Anything involving leg strength and core and I’ll be there!
